GROTON, Conn. — Both sides of Interstate 95 in Groton and the Gold Star Memorial Bridge are closed as crews work to put out a massive, smoky fire caused by a fuel tanker truck rollover late Friday morning.

The driver of the tanker truck has died, New London Mayor Michael Passero confirmed to FOX61. The extent of any other injuries is not known at this time.

For a while. Connecticut doesn't have a great history with big trucks, ref 1980s.

If it's on the pavement, the road will be closed for a while. That kind of fire will melt not only pavement but bridge structure as well. When I was driving tankers in SoCal, a rig I had refused to drive anymore had a bad wreck on the freeway and melted the road and everything around it for some distance. From the looks of the smoke plume, that truck was loaded.
