Dealing with frat house blight UConn says 2 historical homes to be spared demolition
STORRS – The University of Connecticut has agreed to save two of nine historical houses on campus that it had planned to demolish to make way for more green space.
The school announced a deal this week with the State Historic Preservation Office and the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation designed to end opposition to its plan.
The nine houses, near the center of campus, were built around 1920 as homes for faculty. They later were used as fraternity or sorority housing. The Greek organizations were moved to another area in 2003, and the vacant homes fell into disrepair and become fodder for vandals.
Demolition on the remaining seven houses is expected to begin in the next several weeks.
