Looking back on winter 2009-10: 'Snowpocalypse' strikes, smashes December snow records.

Dec. 17, 2014 at 10:05 a.m. EST

'Over the course of the 5th anniversary of the D.C. region’s snowiest winter, we will run a series of posts remembering the events as they happened from now through February 2015.

16.4 inches of snow on the books for D.C. and up to 20 inches or more within the District’s boundaries. Up to two feet in many of the suburbs. Forever immortalized in the hearts and minds of those who lived through it, the storm of December 18-19, 2009 truly was a “Snowpocalypse.”'>>>

In the middle of a block — we had a parking space in the back accessible by alley. Foolishly, we didn’t move our car before the storm, and didn’t think much about it until a couple days later when we realized that a) the city doesn’t plow alleyways, and b) we were running out of food. With nowhere to buy groceries within walking distance, we had to dig out the entire alley — 2-3 feet of snow deep — from the center of the block all the way to the street to get the car out. Not fun!

hanging from the roof over downspouts; shoveling snow and pouring hot water on gutters for days.

Hellish snow storm also in the mid 90s, 28-30 inches in DC, in March I think. We had just come back from Jamaica!
