Risk of severe storms and a perhaps a few tornadoes in the D.C. area Monday

'Powerful storm system blasting east portends a turbulent start to the work week.

The developing powerful storm that is expected to trigger a dangerous outbreak of severe weather in the South on Sunday will barrel toward East Coast during the day Monday. Strong to severe thunderstorms may develop in the Washington region between Monday morning and the late afternoon hours, with the potential for damaging winds and perhaps a few tornadoes.

The storms in the Washington region are unlikely to be as violent and widespread as in parts of the South on Sunday, but could still be dangerous.

The storm intensity and coverage will depend on how warm and humid the air becomes before the cold front triggering the storm activity moves through.

Before any strong to severe storms come through on Monday, a period of moderate to heavy showers and perhaps a bit of thunder likely is Sunday night into Monday morning, with half an inch to an inch of rain falling.

A period of very strong winds is also likely as the cold front passes and in its wake, independent of the storms, with gusts to at least 40 to 50 mph, similar to last Thursday.'>>>
