Freeze watch issued for Washington's western areas as region braces for historic May cold.

Capital Weather Gang

'The polar vortex is about to unleash an Arctic blast, delivering some of the coldest May weather on record for the Washington region.

On Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a freeze watch for western areas of the region Friday night into Saturday morning.

The freeze watch zone includes western Montgomery, western Howard, Frederick (Md.), Loudoun, and Fauquier counties (including Warrenton, Ashburn, Leesburg and Frederick), while areas to the west, including the Blue Ridge Mountains and Interstate 81 corridor (including Winchester and Hagerstown), are under a freeze warning.

“Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing,” both the freeze watch and warning state.'>>>
