Florida Senator Lauren Book (D-District 32) wanted to make it clear that abortions are still legal in Florida.

“What’s important to know is that you can still get legal and safe abortions in the state of Florida today, tomorrow and starting July 1 up until 15 weeks. That’s really important to know. We are not one of those 13 trigger states where abortions stopped today.”

He signed the Reducing Fetal and Infant Mortality Act, which prohibits all abortions after 15 weeks of gestation. Previously it was 24 weeks AND there are no exceptions in HB 5 for rape, incest, or human trafficking.

and tourism follow suit. Red states are going to lose money both from out of state and countries visits and all things to keep anti-abortion viable.

I think it will backfire too. Not just with spring breakers, but with young women enrolling in colleges too. With 1 in 5 college women being sexually assaulted, it would not be safe to be in a state where access to abortions were prohibited (or even severely restricted).

Florida has 56 licensed clinics, that are located in only 17 counties (we have 67 counties in the state). I am in bluer than blue South Florida and what we have access to down here is not like in the northern red counties.

Current precedent from the state Supreme Court still makes abortion legal until 24 weeks if I recall correctly. Let's see if the lower courts actually gives a fuck about precedent until the case gets to the state Supreme Court.

That may push enforcement of the law back a little and give more time but keep your fingers crossed because that is still up in the air.

In their announcement of the legal contest to HB 5, the ACLU’s Twitter thread read:

We’re suing Florida over their ban on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The ban also threatens to put doctors in jail for providing essential care beyond that point.

Florida, we’ll see you in court.

The ban would have a devastating effect on abortion access in a state where access is already restricted.

Resulting barriers will force Floridians to remain pregnant against their will, endangering their families, health, and lives.

The Florida state constitution provides broad protections for individual privacy rights — including the right to abortion.

This ban blatantly violates that constitutional right.

We won’t stop fighting for Floridians’ fundamental right to get the care they need.
