Federal money for SunRail in jeopardy
SunRail is set to start running in May, but its 2016 expansion into Osceola County and farther north into Volusia County may be in jeopardy because $80 million in federal money needed to complete the commuter-rail system no longer is assured.
Federal budget-cutting known as the sequester may have cost SunRail the money it essentially was promised years ago, officials said.
"It's not a slam-dunk
there's politics being played and traded right now," said Osceola County Chairman Frank Attkisson, who also is the chairman of the Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission, which oversees SunRail
Attkisson said he and other SunRail officials visited the Federal Transit Administration in Washington recently to discuss the train and were surprised to learn the money they were counting on might not be available when they want it during the next two years.
