(1,000 posts)Are you just looking for warmer weather or do you need to be in that state specifically?

(11,862 posts)but, sea rise could spread that out!

(1,000 posts)you should check out upstate South Carolina, cheaper than any place in Florida I believe
cost of living is rock bottom and quality of life is quite high overall, the economy is relatively decent and if you're minded to you can spend the rest of your life exploring some of the most beautiful natural environment this country has to offer
it's also a very good place for the long term as this will be one of the last places in the world to have a water shortage
angstlessk
(11,862 posts)Is that okay in that community?
AgerolanAmerican
(1,000 posts)but in the main it's not all that uncommon - the black population of this state is quite high
I'm not in that situation so I can't say first hand. I'd research to see if others have issues but I think it'll be fine. There's a healthy, if small, progressive community here.

(37,457 posts)I don't know specifically about Pensacola, but that part of Florida is jokingly called Lower Alabama. It's very southern.

(11,862 posts)Every home we looked at either pulled out or had other problems...then when we were about to close, the Pre Aproved was pulled!

(37,457 posts)As I said, I would contact the local NAACP chapter and seek their input. Good luck.

(11,862 posts)I've been white all my life (privileged)..and been married to my husband 25 years...most in VA, then we moved to Detroit...he hates it here and wants to move to somewhere else.
I certainty do not want to move from Detroit to someplace more dangerous for him or us.

No Vested Interest

(11,862 posts)Their advertised prices are not anywhere their reserves..
No Vested Interest
(5,166 posts)but, in today's world, one would have to take extra care.
Also, perhaps more so in some localities than others.
It's a pity.
Good luck in your effort to find an appropriate home.

Into Gadsden County:
http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/70-Cedar-Ct_Midway_FL_32343_M60663-45997
Priced low, on a small lot, needs LOTS of repair, no HOA. Has Talquin Electric Co-op supplied electricity and water - Talquin is a pretty good company, I get my power from them. On a cul de sac so no through traffic.
Look at the property appraiser entry for it which includes a sales history: http://qpublic6.qpublic.net/fl_display_dw.php?county=fl_gadsden&KEY=4-12-1N-3W-1510-0000A-0430
At that link, you can go to the maps, find the properties in the neighborhood and get comparison values.
Interesting property ownership history - it's now owned by Bank America aparently. Lex Thompson sold it to the woman who lost it to them, probably because he sold it on a predatory mortgage - $80,000 on that property even with a brand new fancy mobile home was ridiculous for that community. I suspect once they took the house from her it was vandalized. The property appaiser's information shows that the house had AC and was ducted for forced air but the realtor link says it does not have it now.
(I am slightly acquainted with Lex Thompson. He's a banker, down to the depths of his rotten little heart. He has done land deals and trades for at least thirty years and made millions at it.. He grew up in the same town I did, his sister and my little sister were good friends and are still in touch with each other. This is NOT a recommendation since that is the sister I do not speak to. Basically, not nice people.)
But - Lex owns the lot next door to the house above. There might be a possibility of getting that lot, too.
Midway is a mixed community - for at least the last forty years students have been moving there, some staying after they graduate. Leon County to the east is the state capital, pretty Democratic in voting. Gadsden has a high African-American population and tends to vote Democratic.
An advantage is that Midway is close to Tallahassee for shopping, arts, the universities (Florida State and Florida A & M) and all the activities and services that come with having a bigger community.
If you move farther west into the Panhandle, it all tends to be very red. Marianna, Crestview and most of the little towns westward are pretty redneck and very right wing. Lots of retired military, too, many of whom go there for like minded political views.
