Thousands turn out for Sarasota Women's Solidarity March

SARASOTA - The sidewalk along the John Ringling Causeway on Saturday was a sea of brightly dressed protesters waving signs supporting human rights and responding to honks from cars driving by.

Organizers estimated that more than 10,000 people turned out for the Sarasota Women's Solidarity March across the bridge beginning around noon. People, not just women, of all ages joined the local grassroots march as a way to support those at the Women's March on Washington. While many came from the Sarasota area, others arrived from as far as Wesley Chapel and Port Charlotte, and there were a number of snowbirds from out of state. Local celebrities such as author Stephen King spoke at the event.

"I'm so happy with how it turned out," event organizer Cathy Bryant, 41, said. "The energy was fantastic, the speakers were great; I don't think it could have gone any better."

Led by new organization Action Together Suncoast and Bryant, the march started as a way to acknowledge the march in Washington, D.C., for those who could not go.

numbers are tallied up, these small cities and big towns, even just there in Florida, are really gonna add up!

So who's in charge of the tallyin, anyway?? (rhetorical question!) - I think the final number will be 1.5 brazillion when all is said and done!

I don't know who is maintaining the count, but based upon the counts that I'm seeing I would guess that there were at least 3 million that made the march. My rough guess for Texas is at least 75,000 and possibly closer to 100,000. I even saw some of my conservative acquaintances on Facebook liking various posts regarding the marches in their locales--maybe the wives hacked their husband's FB accounts?

I only saw two negative posts about the marches--one was in Alabama while the other is a generic message from women that said they didn't need to join any marches. The generic message has already appeared on DU.

I still haven't covered a few of the larger cities in Florida such as Tampa, Orlando and Miami, but I will get to them shortly.
