A brush fire burned at least 100 cars at an airport in southwest Florida Friday, spewing plumes of black smoke that could be seen up to 20 miles away.

Officials said the cause of the fire wasn't known, but the blaze was likely fueled by dry conditions and record heat.

The fire happened in an overflow parking area for rental cars at Southwest Florida International Airport near Fort Myers, in Lee County. The county and much of the Florida peninsula are experiencing moderate drought conditions, according to the United States Drought Monitor.

Some 59 wildfires were active across the state as of Saturday morning, and every county in the state was at either moderate or high risk for fire, according to the Florida Forest Service.

A fire that spread across 15 acres destroyed more than 3,500 rental cars at the rental car overflow area of Southwest Florida International Airport on Friday, Lee County Port Authority said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. It drew a response from every Lee County fire department with assistance from aviation and fire departments in neighboring Collier and Charlotte counties. Multiple law enforcement agencies in Southwest Florida were also on scene to assist and manage the roads.

The fire was fully contained and extinguished Saturday as crews worked through the night Friday, putting out the flames to ensure it did not continue to spread or cause further damage.

More than 3,800 rental cars, belonging to the various rental car agencies that serve the airport, were undamaged and relocated.

If you wanted to reduce a large inventory of very expensive items and not have it looked at too closely, that would be the place to do it.

Oh look! Smoke!!

That department has a long history of hiring assholes. If they stop you while walking down the street and you refuse to identify yourself, many of those guys on that force will ignore any and all laws and arrest your ass. They like the charge "Loitering and Prowling" which is a contradiction, because those two things are mutually exclusive! It's mainly a "Contempt of Cop" kind of charge, and they are notorious for that bullshit.

The local news made light of the large crowd that gathered not withstanding the recent stay at home order. People interviewed said that they were bored and this was the most exciting thing to happen in days. Pandemics are so boring to the local idiots.
