Publix forbids employees from wearing Black Lives Matter masks at work

Quinton Desamours was emotional after attending his first protest in downtown Fort Myers. The speeches about participating in a nationwide movement against oppression had been so inspiring, he cried.

So the next day, June 6, the 18-year-old scribbled “BLM”— for Black Lives Matter — on the front of his surgical mask and clocked into work at Publix on Lee Boulevard in Lehigh Acres.

His manager quickly pulled him aside and told him to go home.

“He said I was putting myself and the rest of the employees in danger and he couldn’t have me out on the floor with that mask on,” Desamours said, whose story was first reported in the Fort Myers News-Press.

Which are all their employees past and present. A business like Publix is going to stay out of the argument entirely, and that's okay. I would guarantee there are uniform rules that forbid any branding or statements allowed at all, and that those rules have been in place a long time.

Businesses have dress codes, and that's what this is ultimately about. But if you want to boycott them, you go right ahead.
In the meantime, Publix is the only grocery store in NC that carries traditional Cuban bread and Spanish pork roast as well as several other Cuban and Spanish foods, so I'll be going grocery shopping at Publix.

We were only allowed to wear our union button and no other items that contained any messages. The workplace is not a democracy and you are subject to the restrictions placed upon expression by the employer. If you don’t like those restrictions, you go home.

Imagine a different employee that did the same but elected to mark the mask 😷 with KKK? What would the employer do then if the first employee had been allowed to work with the BLM mask?
