GOP lawmaker from Woodstock arrested in Springfield on DUI charge

A Republican state representative from Woodstock was arrested in Springfield early Thursday, shortly after midnight, and charged with drunken driving after a traffic stop by Illinois State Police.

Rep. Steven Reick, who in November was elected to his second term in the Illinois House, allegedly was driving 47 mph in a 30 mph zone and failed to signal when turning into a Burger King parking lot, according to Sangamon County sheriff’s office records.

Reick, 66, failed a field sobriety test, and his blood-alcohol level was 0.146 percent, exceeding the legal limit of 0.08, records show. He told the state police trooper who pulled him over that he’d been drinking wine earlier in the evening and had too much, according to sheriff’s office records.

Reick was released Thursday morning, records show. His first hearing in the case is set for May 30 in Sangamon County Circuit Court.

It will take a major overhaul to get rid of the image that he is a drunk. He probably should arrange for addiction treatment if he wants to stay in office.
