Underwood update

“ U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood has moved into the lead in her tightly contested reelection race against Republican challenger Jim Oberweis, according to new ballot counts filed late Saturday night by the Lake County clerk's office.

Those updated unofficial results show Underwood, a freshman Democrat from Naperville, picking up 2,071 more votes in Lake to Oberweis' 929, erasing the Republican's previous 558-vote lead across the 14th District and giving the incumbent a 584-vote edge.”

From: https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20201108/underwood-moves-ahead-of-oberweis-as-lake-county-updates-results

The Chicago Tribune has the numbers at:

Lauren Underwood (DEM)
191,359

Jim Oberweis (GOP)
190,775

This race is particularly difficult to track as it spans numerous counties.

Her district is so insanely gerrymandered that it runs like a snake through 5 or 6 different counties.

I lived in McHenry and DeKalb counties when I lived in Illinois. That state needs some change in the manner of addressing leftovers from decades of corruption.

Has anyone speculated on why such a switch in voter preference? I thought she was well liked.

Part of her district is one neighborhood away from mine. Our district, the 6th, is also very weirdly shaped, rather like a very abstract letter C. We only have parts of 5 counties.

I was very worried about Sean Casten, but thankfully he had his seat. I wonder if Lauren Underwood was hurt by that last minute media blitz Oberweiss put out with the audio (heavily edited in my opinion) regarding the “rioting”

...the time, and I thought they were well done. Didn’t hear much from Casten until the last couple of weeks of the campaign.

We actually volunteered for one of his competitors in the 2018 primary - Kelly Mazeski. There were too many people running in that primary who didn’t stand a chance, and who diluted the votes.

My daughter kept telling me that she saw Casten ads all over Hulu and YouTube. I tend to mostly watch cable and I was worried about the lopsided Ives advertising there as well. Her ads seemed very well calculated to appeal to a certain demographic around here.

This was Hastert's old district, and very republican.

A friend of mine ran for a state rep. seat two years ago. She ran a good race, but lost in our red district. At least she made the little shit who is our rep. in Springfield earn his seat.

Two weeks later she got a call from a family member. All of her family are republican scum. She does not speak to them. The relative wanted her to challenge Underwood in a primary for this election. She was speechless and hung up on the guy. She has not spoken to him since.

A primary would have exhausted time and resources for Underwood. It would have been a way of weakening her. They realized that she would be effective and they wanted to get rid of her ASAP.

I think that is why she lost votes. The repiggies did everything they could to challenge her.

Another one they challenged was Cheri Bustos in the 17th Congressional District. They imported someone to run against Cheri and threw a lot of money at this one, too.

Cheri's district is not like Underwood's. But she usually wins her district by 20%. This time she had the fight of her life to win. They hate her because she is effective, too, and is moving up in a leadership position.

We have to fight them tooth and nail every damn time. We can see from this election how important every vote is. They are always trying to stay one step ahead. That means we have to stay three steps ahead.
