Deerhead owner defends viral Facebook post saying 'free money' prevents hiring

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Chuck Johnson said he didn't mean to offend anyone.

The owner of Deerhead Sidewalk Cafe & Bar went to Facebook Sunday to inform customers that he's closing on Sundays at least through Labor Day due a lack of staffing.

Had Johnson's statement ended there, it likely would not have gone viral, with hundreds of angry responses. Instead, the Facebook post continued:

"We will be closed on Sundays until further notice, or when they stop getting free money and have to work again. Sorry for the inconvenience."

The post came with a photo of the late actor John Candy's security officer character in "National Lampoon's Vacation," signaling stop.

He probably treats his workers like crap and pays them as little as he can get away with.

Employers need to look in the mirror.

That is why there aren't any people applying for the jobs he has open.

"American workforce is a singular noun naming a collective. It is the reference for the word "they".

The use of the plural word "they" is grammatically incorrect, however it clearly sends the message of 'the other', them, they, workers, the used and useful for the "me/we".

The free-money vs free-labor conflict continues. The wealth of the few is essentially free money for them, created by labor that is severely underpaid; some labor hours are essentially unpaid wage theft.
