Guns are becoming a running theme in Indiana legislature
The floor debate Tuesday included one lawmaker who described growing up watching his father beat his mother, another who as a cop entered homes roiling from domestic violence and a third who worked in a shelter for battered women. The trio of Democratic lawmakers argued that adding more guns to domestic violence situations is a dangerous idea.
The supporters of House Bill 1071, however, argued the opposite, that the bill would help protect potential victims from domestic abusers. The proposal would enable people shielded by court orders of protection — such as victims of domestic violence — to carry handguns without a license.
That argument carried the day. In a lopsided 71-26 vote, the Indiana House approved sending the measure to the Senate.
"It is extending the right of protection outside the home for those who need it most," said Rep. Sean Eberhart, R-Shelbyville, author of the bill.
