Fired investigator pays trooper's speeding ticket

The guy who blew the whistle on Governor Leadfoot's vehicle running down the highway at over 80mph paid the driver's speeding ticket;

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A former Iowa criminal investigator who was removed from duty after complaining about Governor Terry Branstad's speeding SUV has paid the speeding ticket issued to a state trooper driving the vehicle.

Larry Hedlund paid the $181.50 ticket issued to Steve Lawrence, the trooper who was driving Branstad and Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds in the governor's SUV on April 26th. The vehicle was clocked by a deputy traveling 84 miles per hour in a 65-mph zone on Highway 20.

Hedlund, who maintains he was fired in retaliation for complaining about the governor's speeding vehicle, said Saturday that he paid Lawrence's ticket because Branstad "had no intention of stepping up and doing so."

Hedlund sent an email to Lawrence saying his complaint "was never intended to hurt" Lawrence or cost him money.

in a state plane. The State Patrol would rush him to the airport in a big black Suburban, with another one full of bodyguards & lackeys close behind. Then he would be picked up at the destination airport by a similar mini-convoy. One time he flew to Janesville, about 50 miles from Madison, & the Patrol couldn't come up with the requisite vehicles to pick him up on the other end. Their solution? They raced down at 100 MPH, sirens blaring, to pick him up at the Janesville airport with the same Suburbans and crew that had driven him to the Madison airport.

This kind of smacks of seeking public martyrdom to me.

The poor trooper doing the driving was no doubt under orders to speed, and probably felt his job was at risk if he didn't comply.

It also made a news story of the incident.

Right on, I say.
