Maquoketa shooting

Most of you probably heard about an Aaron Scott taking his own life after getting in a shootout with Maquoketa police Sergeant Brendan Zeimet. This part demonstrates why some people should probably not be anywhere near guns;

Despite a history of mental illness, alcohol abuse and accidentally shooting a friend in 2007, Scott was a registered gun owner.

"Scott did have a valid permit from Jones County to have a concealed firearm and based on the criteria set forth in Iowa, he was not precluded from that," said George.

Now, Maquoketa Police say it's time to move on.

Maquoketa Police Chief Brad Koranda said, "I also want to keep in mind the Scott family also had a tragedy that night and we as a department give our sympathies to them also. "

By the way, the header above is Just thought I'd better clear that up. But an awful lot of folks in here think police are always at fault in stuff like this.
This case proves beyond a doubt that stiffer background checks are needed. Scott was clearly troubled and should have never been allowed near a firearm of any kind.

The county sheriff where Scott's permit was issued knew that issuing the man a permit probably wouldn't end well. I imagine the Sheriff thought his hands were tied because of the shall issue law and he probably didn't think fighting it would hold up in court.
