Johnson County dealing with lack of Republican poll workers

From Johnson county.

IOWA CITY — Johnson County officials say some polling places could end up closed if more Republicans don’t volunteer to be poll workers.

“We have to have [at least one] Republican at each one to open it,” said Auditor Travis Weipert.

Weipert said at this point he doesn’t think the county will need to close any polling places on election day, but he’s concerned about the potential that some poll workers could call in sick.

State law requires a balance of poll workers between Republicans and Democrats. Weipert said the county could use an “emergency rule,” which would allow polls to operate with just one Republican worker, but he hopes to avoid that by attracting more Republican volunteers.

“If about 200 [Republicans] walked in and filled out an application, I’d be really happy,” said Weipert. “So if you’re a Republican, you want to work the polls, come down [to the auditor’s office] immediately.”

I kind of want to laugh at the trouble of finding people willing to admit to being Republicans, but I could see the tbags trying to twist this to their own advantage.
