Joni Ernst was assaulted by her husband after she confronted him about his alleged affair with their daughter's babysitter, she wrote in court filings.
Ernst, a Republican who represents Iowa, said that during her 26-year marriage with Gail Ernst, she was the victim of verbal and mental abuse and a physical assault after which a victim's advocate wanted to take her to a hospital, she wrote in public records connected to their divorce.
"Gail has been very cruel," she wrote. "This has been an extremely painful journey."
Ernst in August announced through a brief statement that she and Gail Ernst were divorcing. The divorce was finalized this month.

(53,389 posts)How sad is it that Ernst would be an improvement as a VP. Actually nearly any warm blooded mammal (and some cold blooded reptiles) would be an improvement over Pence.
"She admitted to the affair, said she was sorry and begged me not to say anything," Gail Ernst wrote. But their daughter was 4 at the time, he wrote, so he "swallowed (his) pride and kept quiet."

(53,389 posts)Many of the questions dealt with what one attendee called "the elephant in the room"--the continuing partial federal government shutdown--and President Trump's continuing call for funding for a border wall across the southern border. Ernst reiterated previous comments that the wall would not span the entire border--she says technology could be used to cover areas where land doesn't allow for a barrier. The senator also says a border wall isn't a new idea.

Another resident questioned how anyone in the Senate could defend the shutdown, saying she was "deeply ashamed" of how federal employees were being treated....
