This time in Des Moines
Three days after being assaulted on the south side of Des Moines, DarQuan Jones wondered, "Why me?"
Jones, 22, suffered multiple facial fractures, a broken wrist and other injuries that required 10 stitches during what he, his family and the NAACP of Des Moines say was a racially motivated attack.
Jones, who is black, told the Register he was on his way to his girlfriend's house around 3:25 a.m. Saturday when three white men attacked him, thinking he was trying to break into a nearby home. He said the suspects, whom he didn't know, yelled racial slurs throughout the assault.
No arrests had been made as of Tuesday afternoon, nor have the suspects been identified, according to Des Moines police spokesman Sgt. Paul Parizek. Police aren't calling the assault racially motivated until the suspects are found and their motives determined, Parizek said.
