Iowa is first in the nation to permanently legalize to-go cocktails

Iowa has officially legalized the sale of to-go cocktails, making the COVID-19 fad a permanent fixture in the state.

Gov. Kim Reynolds signed House File 2540 into law on Monday, legalizing the sale of sealed alcohol for consumption “off-premises.” In the past, drinks sold by bars and restaurants had to be consumed on-site.

While other states have implemented temporary measures allowing for the sale of to-go cocktails, Iowa is the first one to make it a permanent fixture, said Jessica Dunker, president of the Iowa Restaurant Association.

The new law will help Iowa restaurants and bars as more consumers order their meals to-go during the pandemic.

“We need every tool in the tool shed,” Dunker said.

Bars have drive up windows for cocktails and such. Liquor stores have drive up windows. No open container while driving laws. And this is in every town, not Bourbon Street. Bourbon Street is a different level. 6AM bars shut down for an hour to clean. Patrons take their drinks and crowd the street until the bars reopen.

... It’s generally accepted that the first drive-thru daiquiri stand opened in Lafayette, Louisiana in 1981; the state had no laws against drinking and driving at the time, and although the new business experienced some pushback from the community, it wasn’t enough to shut it down, or to dampen its popularity. Soon, competitors started springing up all over the area ...

Currently, more than 30 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico have implemented emergency measures for restaurants and bars to serve cocktails for delivery and takeout, according to data from the National Restaurant Association.

MADD is against these efforts but I think they are fighting against a popular trend unfortunately...in effects to fight the CV, I guess all efforts should be considered...

maybe if we'd treated him nicer he would have done us a favor and stuck round for another 30 years. Instead we got Reynolds to show what bad governing can really be like.

When we moved there in 68, you waited in line at the counter to place your order. You couldn't browse. Just buy what you could see from waiting at the counter. Or read up on wine, whiskey, etc brands. Ask at counter if the store carried it.

can't recall the limits, but there were limits on how much liquor a person could purchase. He got books from non-drinking friends.
