Bob Dole receives Congressional Gold Medal along with praise from Trump, Democrats

WASHINGTON -- Bob Dole, longtime Senate Republican leader and the GOP’s 1996 presidential nominee, on Wednesday received the Congressional Gold Medal for his service in war and government.

The 94-year-old World War II veteran’s achievements were praised by Democrats and Republicans alike as he received the honor in a ceremony at the Capitol’s Rotunda.

President Donald Trump reflected on Dole’s accomplishments and praised him for his work with veterans and the National World War II Memorial in Washington.

“You are a friend. You are a patriot, a hero, a leader,” Trump said. “It is an honor to be with you, Bob. Thank you for your service.”

he was also a Republican who could be worked with to accept compromise solutions. Dole sacrificed for his country with his war service which is something that I won't overlook. I voted for Bill Clinton over Dole in 1996, but I don't think Dole would have made the same stupid mistakes that George W. Bush or Donald Trump made.

It would be so much easier if the Republicans in Congress would do what is good for the country rather than what is best for their own personal interests.

Those who thought of the good of the country. My parents actually met the Doles once - back when he ran with Ford back in 1976. I remember that my Dad was quite taken with Liddy Dole, LOL. My brother was in his first year of college back then and he worked on the Ford-Dole campaign. I don't remember being invited.

...Dole's politics, he certainly deserved this honor. I am sorry Trump participated; it ruined the ceremony, for me.
