Group: Kansas Senator Tampered With Mail

Terri Huntington Accused Of Trying To Access Post Office Box

A Kansas political group has accused a state senator from Johnson County of tampering with its mail.

The group, which wants to eliminate the Kansas state income tax, said State Sen. Terri Huntington tried to get into its post office box without permission.

Huntington, a moderate Republican, is one of several state senators who are the targets of direct mail campaign from Kansans For No Income Tax. The group has mailed flyers to voters in Huntington's district, urging them to tell her to support doing away with the tax.

The group included its return address on the flyers and said it expected lots of responses. When the group's treasurer, Rebecca Mank, went to collect the mail one day, she said she found nothing.

"The group misrepresented its intent, making Kansans think they were contacting their state senator, when in reality, the group was building its own database with my constituents' information," Huntington told Mahoney in an email.

income tax is eliminated and corporate taxes are bought down to nothing which seems to be Brownback's goal, how will significant state revenue be created.

Will the sales tax go up and up along with real estate taxes or what. Or is the plan to basically bring state programs down to pretty much a halt.

property taxes. I was looking at the tax rates in Florida recently, for example, who has no income tax and it seemed to me the property taxes were way higher in Florida.

seems high. Same old gimmick, tout no taxes, but then it's really made up someplace else. Brownback was saying he wanted KS just like OK, then awhile back he said he wanted KS like Texas. ... wonder which state will be his next idol. I think a lot of people are getting fed up with this guy. I can see him hanging his hat on a 30% sales tax. I think his fellow R's would go bonkers.

You don't have to guess.

Just click a couple of links, the first link to my journal entry on the state tax report and then the link to the report.

Property taxes in Florida do not seem as huge as sales taxes. In Florida, the bottom 20% pays an average total tax rate of 13.5%. 9.4% from sales taxes and 4.1% from property taxes. The middle quintile pays 9.0%, 6.2% from sales taxes and 3.0% from property taxes. The top 1% pays 2.1%.

In Kansas, the bottom quintile pays 9.2% - 6.3% from sales taxes (which Brownback wants to increase), 3.5% from property taxes (not much different from Florida) and minus .6% from income taxes (which Brownback wants to eliminate). The middle quintile pays 9.0% (the same as Florida) - 4.2% from sales tax, 2.4% from property tax and 2.4 from income taxes. In Kansas, the top 1% pays 5.9% thanks to 3.5% from income taxes (which Brownback wants to eliminate).

So property taxes are a little higher in Florida, but not hugely so.
