Wichita mayor calls special meeting on sales tax election timing
WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Wichita Mayor Lily Wu has called a special meeting to discuss moving the special election for a one percent, citywide sales tax to the August 4, 2026 election ballot.
During Tuesdays city council meeting, Wu said she had spoken to Wichitans who had serious concerns that the election was being rushed. She said she also had her own concerns after learning that the election would cost $170,000 and would lead to a change in polling location for nearly 26,000 people.
While I recognize some may disagree with this action, my obligation is to do what I believe is right for the people of Wichita, Wu said in an official statement. With overseas ballots scheduled to be mailed Friday, this is our last opportunity to pause and ensure the process is fair, transparent, and worthy of the trust our residents place in us.
The mayor called for a vote to hold a special meeting to discuss the delay, but it was voted down, 4-3. City attorney Jennifer Magaña then explained that either the mayor or four city council members could bring forth a special meeting.
