Massive damage, casualties expected after overnight flooding in Eastern Kentucky, governor says

People were stranded on rooftops and others unaccounted for Thursday after heavy rains caused massive flooding across Eastern Kentucky in what the governor called one of "the worst, most devastating flooding events" in state history.

“We probably have not seen the worst of it," Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said at a morning news conference. "Sadly, we believe that we will lose Kentuckians and a lot of Kentuckians will probably lose most of what they have.”

There were no immediate reports of injuries or deaths. Beshear had called a state of emergency and the National Guard has been mobilized.

Gen. Hal Lamberton said crews were working to rescue people stranded on roofs of homes. Staff at a school were also stranded, he said.

1. I was in the middle of a huge flood there in 1977...

When the water runs off the mountains, it gathers in the valleys rather quickly. Especially if there are new strip roads for strip mining, or if the environment has been damaged. (The natural environment cannot absorb and balance the water as the strip roads are like ditches) That is what happened in '77, in my opinion.

2. Most recent reports on NPR say that

the confirmed death toll death toll so far is 25, with more expected as rescuers take advantage today of a lull in the rain to search for survivors. More rain predicted for tonight.

Whole towns are under water and mudslides are causing homes to collapse.
