Steve Scalise says he's set to undergo additional surgery, asks for continued support

WASHINGTON — Congressman Steve Scalise will go under the surgeon’s scalpel Wednesday, the latest chapter in his seven-month-long recovery from a gunshot wound suffered during a June attack.

Scalise, a Jefferson Parish Republican and the House majority whip, said Tuesday morning the procedure had been scheduled for more than a month. He’s already undergone several major surgeries and spent about three months in a Washington, D.C., hospital recovering.

The 52-year-old lawmaker was shot through the hip by a lone gunman during an early morning congressional Republican baseball practice on June 14 in a northern Virginia suburb of Washington. The shooter, a 66-year-old Illinois man who’d penned rage-filled screeds against Republican politicians, was killed by police officers assigned to protect Scalise and others responding to the gunfire.

“I look forward to getting this done and getting back to work,” Scalise said, adding he hopes “to be back in the coming weeks.”

1. I wish for him a successful procedure and a full and speedy recovery.

And for me, I wish they'd give him an empathy implant while they're in there.

4. I was intending to write something along those lines,

but I didn't want to be crass about it since I posted the OP.

5. Yeah, a really good outcome for all of us would be if he had some sort of epiphany.

6. I understand why some feel that way.

Sympathy is one the few things that I can afford to give these days. I would make a similar comment whether it involves a human or an animal that is suffering.

3. I support him as much as he supports providing health care to everyone else.

7. It's unfortunate that he did not learn anything about how health care affects other people

while he was hospitalized. However, I can also why DUers would be indifferent to Scalise considering his indifference to most Americans.

8. None from me.

When he begins to conduct himself as a caring, responsible human being for others then, and only then, will he deserve the compassion of others.
