Ex-Sheriff Jack Strain still in jail with bond set at $400,000

Former St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain remained behind bars Thursday morning (June 13) in the parish jail in Covington, where he was booked Tuesday on sex crime charges.

A spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office initially said Wednesday night that Strain, 56, could be moved out of the jail that he ran for 20 years as the parish sheriff because Commissioner Dan Foil of the 22nd Judicial District Court approved a request for Strain to be relocated. However, the spokeswoman said Thursday that her information was wrong and that Foil had not approved such a move.

Meanwhile, the Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that no decisions had been made about moving Strain, who is being held in lieu of $400,000 bond.

“No decisions or plans have been made at this time regarding his move to another facility,” a spokeswoman said. “No request was made by the STPSO; however, no request is needed to move an inmate.”

Strain, who was defeated in the fall 2015 election, was arrested this week after being indicted by a parish grand jury on two counts of aggravated rape, two counts of aggravated incest, indecent behavior with a juvenile and sexual battery. He is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges July 3.
