Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards: 'Tens of thousands' remain displaced by Hurricane Laura
Gov. John Bel Edwards said Wednesday tens of thousands of Louisianans remain displaced by Hurricane Laura with as many as 10,000 sheltering in neighboring Texas as two more storm-related deaths were confirmed.
"Progress is being made each day, but we have a long road ahead of us," said Edwards, who is returning Wednesday to Lake Charles, Louisiana's hardest-hit major city. "We know people are out there suffering."
Louisiana's Department of health said a 36-year-old man and a woman in her 80s died of heat-related illness following the storm in Beauregard Parish, raising the state's death toll to 17.
The state was sheltering 11,452 on Wednesday with 10,980 of those in non-congregate hotel settings so as stem the spread of COVID-19.
