Katahdin's Knife Edge....

Crossed it a few times in my younger life. Hike up, with full pack, wasn't a problem. Hiking down was really tough. We;d head into Russel Pond, I;think it was about 15 miles from the top.

Back then, people would hike up to the "chimney" with their gliders. Once oriented and set, they'd step out and the chimney would lift them another 1000 feet or so, immediately. No forward movement, just lift.

Danced on the jettys of Brant Rock as a kid. Developed a safety balance. Did 30 of 4000 footers in White Mountains.
Ran down many of them with a heavy pack as we overnighted. Knees tell the story today.
Did Orizaba in Mexico. Antigua and Fuego in Guatemala. Snowed in on top of Antigua in 1978. Wild lightning surrounded by thunderhead.
Hoped to make it to Aconagua in Peru. Ran out of road in my '65 Volvo Wagon.
