Maryland surges past BC to cap undefeated season with women's national lacrosse title

FOXBOROUGH — An aura of redemption and heartbreak circulated across the turf at Gillette Stadium at the conclusion of the Division 1 women’s lacrosse national championship Sunday at Gillette Stadium.

Almost a year ago to the day after Maryland had its dream of an undefeated season shattered in the title game by North Carolina, the top-ranked Terps vindicated themselves. Maryland (23-0) capped a perfect season by winning, 16-13, over unseeded Boston College before a women’s lacrosse record crowd of 11,688.

“Give these guys all the credit,” said Maryland coach Cathy Reese, whose squad won its third title in four years and 13th overall. “They played hard. They played their hearts out. To have the season they had this year going undefeated was something that’s really special.”

For BC (17-7), a choked-up coach Acacia Walker signified the agony of defeat after such an improbable journey came to a disappointing close. The Eagles, were led by a championship game record-tying day from junior Kenzie Kent, whose 10-point performance (five goals, five assists) garnered her Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament.
