Former Republican Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan to run for Senate, 11 News confirms

Breaking news:

I can't bear to post the statement; please read it at the link.

And I guess this means we have to redouble our efforts to elect a Democratic senator, because people might be lulled into complacency by promises of moderation. I will stand outside Metro stations, go canvassing, and whatever else it takes.

Yes both red and blue states do vote for governors of the other party. But rarely senators.

A big Baltimore turnout would be good I assume. And it will be a presidential election year.

Hogan spoke out forcefully against Trump, he's the kind of guy that MAGAs would rather see lose because he's worse than a Democrat, he's a traitor to Trump. It will be tough for him to get a lot of support from the right wing of the party in Maryland. This is a very blue state and Hogan is exactly the kind of "old fashioned" Republican that blue state voters occasionally fall in love with for some reason, but if he goes up against a solid Democratic opponent, can he sway enough independents and Democrats to counter defections from his base?

Simply because he (1) is different and (2) has succeeded in winning statewide office, I'm not making any predictions on the election. Still, we don't know what other factors will come into play, and on top of that no one can be sanguine about how or what he'd do in the Senate, if he ever got there. We know very well what the Republican agenda is and how meaningless and/or spineless one senator can be.
