Montreal Is Really Good at Snow Removal, Eh?....

Montreal has long been seen as the city with “undisputed expertise” in matters of snow removal.

A 1999 Globe and Mail article described the city’s approach:

“It’s one of the snowiest major cities in the world, and its approach to snow is akin to the U.S. attitude toward Saddam Hussein—it’s an archenemy that should, ideally, be removed from the scene as fast as possible.”

They don’t just plow the streets. They also plow the sidewalks. (Imagine!)

But plowing is just the beginning of the city’s snow management strategy. Once plowing is complete, the actual removal begins.

Snow removal in Boston often means the removal of snow from the middle of the street to the edge of the street. Or the sidewalk, to the never ending frustration of property owners and pedestrians.

They did that on the main street. They plowed all of the snow into the middle of the street, including scraping it off with graders. Then they had a massive snowblower move down the middle of the street blowing it all into a parade of dump trucks. As each truck filled up, it would peel away and be replaced by an empty one.

Intersections become slushy lagoons. Doesn't matter how good your footwear is, you're going in.

got dumped along the Front Range in Colorado. We were living in Golden at the time, got the full three feet, and the snow removal in that city was impressive. The first day the main streets were plowed just enough for two lanes of traffic. I think it only took that city three days to clear the snow off every single street quite thoroughly. The same snowstorm Denver couldn't begin to handle what was really much less accumulation because they are somewhat east of the mountains. Whoever was then mayor was booted out of office as soon as possible, if I recall correctly. And if I'm wrong about that, it certainly made him quite unpopular, although I can't recall the name this long after.

kind of thing down in town (West Yellowstone, MT). I live up on the mountainside but that's what they use in and outside the park, we get yards of snow here... rather than feet usually.
