Baker cites a number of large social gatherings as a recipe for coronavirus disaster

Governor Charlie Baker said Friday that recent large gatherings in communities throughout the state were a “recipe for disaster” in potentially spreading the coronavirus, and warned residents that “we’re going to have to make some changes” if the positive test rate continues to move up.

Baker made the comments during his regular State House briefing.

“Recently, we’ve seen disturbing reports of large gatherings where people are letting down their guard, not wearing face coverings, not social distancing, and giving the virus the opening that it relentlessly seeks to spread,” Baker said.

He cited a recent lifeguard party in Falmouth, a house party in Chatham, an unauthorized football camp in Weymouth, a Chelmsford party, a Wrentham gathering, and a prom party in Cohasset attended by 90. He also noted reports about a cluster at Bay State Medical Center in Springfield. A party on a private boat in Boston Harbor is also under investigation as a cluster by the Department of Public Health, he said.

As a senior citizen I have just ordered n95 masks to replace the surgical masks I have been using.

And that's where they all seem to come from, some kind of private gathering that results in several new cases. And, given that the beaches on the lake are now open and we're seeing an influx of out-of-state visitors, I'm expecting it to only get worse...

blocks away from me. The town will also have thousands of A&M students arriving soon. The number of new infections in the county leveled off this week, but I expect another spike when the students return.

Since the students live, eat and go to classes together while they come from all over the country. I looked up my school awhile back and the plan is for them to live in sequestered groups, no visitors allowed. And whoever brings them is only allowed to stay for as long as it takes for them to unload their stuff. I have no idea what they're going to do about classes, maintain "social distancing?" I've heard that the new "distance" has been expanded to 13 feet. And classes vary widely, I took a couple that only had 5 or 7 students, while there were others in a large auditorium. And my college was at the top of a hill in a very small town, will students also be prevented from going "into town?" Off campus living is also prohibited.

And this is New York. As we know, there's no national plan. I was recently talking to someone whose two teenagers are returning to college in Pennsylvania. It looks like each school is on its own when it comes to how they handle all this...

but I doubt masks will be in use there. As much as I'd like to go I know if I do I'll be counting down the 14 days after. Best not to put oneself in the situation.
