Sudbury town clerk: Why school race results changed on election night
A change in the vote totals after polls closed in Sudbury's March 30 town election has left write-in School Committee candidate Jonathan Sullivan looking for answers about how an apparent election night win became a narrow loss.
Sullivan told the Daily News that town officials initially informed him on election night that his write-in bid to defeat one of two listed candidates for a seat on the School Committee was successful by 11 votes.
But when the town later posted its unofficial results, Sullivan had garnered 1,437 votes, 15 fewer than second-place finisher Ellen Lederer-DeFrancesco, who received 1,452. Julie Durgin-Sicree topped the ticket with 1,566 votes, retaining the seat to which she was appointed in December after Mandy Sim resigned.
Sullivan's write-in campaign began less than a month before the election. He framed his candidacy around refocusing the committee on its core responsibilities and maintaining the quality of Sudbury Public Schools.
