MI-AG: McDonald (D) holds strongest leads over GOP candidates in Michigan AG race, new polling shows

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald, running in 2026 to become Michigan’s next attorney general, has the strongest leads against the Republican candidates compared to other Democrats in the primary, according to a new poll released Wednesday.

The poll, conducted in late November by Public Policy Polling, shows McDonald with a seven-point lead over attorney Matt DePerno, who is currently facing felony charges in an alleged scheme to tamper with election equipment during the 2020 election, and a five-point lead over attorney Kevin Kijewski, who has represented one of the “false electors” who was charged with attempting to submit a slate of 2020 electoral votes for Donald Trump.

McDonald’s Democratic primary opponents, Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit and former U.S. Attorney Mark Totten of the Western District of Michigan, each held smaller leads over each Republican candidate, all within the margin of error of the poll.

Savit was tied with Kijewski in the poll, while Totten held a one-point lead. Against DePerno, Savit and Totten were both three points ahead. The poll also showed McDonald, who prosecuted the shooter in the 2021 Oxford High School shooting as well as his parents, with greater name recognition among Democratic voters.
