MI-SD35: Ahead of high-stakes Michigan Senate special election, both parties bring in heavy hitters

In advance of Tuesday’s special election, both major parties are sending heavy hitters — many of whom are candidates themselves for offices in the August primary and November general elections — to stump for their respective candidates, a trend which shows just how seriously both Democrats and Republicans are taking the election.

Democrats especially have brought some of their biggest names in the state into the 35th Senate District to push for Greene and to engage with the community.

Most notably, Whitmer is joining Greene for a Get Out The Vote rally in Bay City on Wednesday, just under a week before the election. Gilchrist — himself a candidate in November for Secretary of State — also rallied with Greene on Monday in Saginaw.

On the Republican side of the race, U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers knocked doors for Tunney in mid-April, emphasizing the importance of informing voters about the special election itself.

“It helps a lot going door-to-door with Mike Rogers, instant credibility, they know Mike, but they may not know about the special election,” Tunney said in a video posted by Rogers’ campaign.
