Ex-NFL player runs for mayor of Highland Park, pledges to rebuild city 'block by block'

Former NFL player J Douglas Hollie is running for mayor of Highland Park with an ambitious plan to revive the struggling Detroit enclave where he grew up.

Hollie, 65, is formally announcing his campaign at a community meeting from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Boys and Girls Club of Highland Park.

The club “played a big part in my life, so that’s why I’m going to make my announcement at the Boys and Girls Club,” Hollie tells Metro Times. “That’s where my journey began.”

A Highland Park High School graduate, Hollie went on to play football at Southern Methodist University, which is partially located in Highland Park, Texas, and was selected by the Detroit Lions in the third round of the 1984 supplemental draft. He played in the USFL for the Pittsburgh Maulers and Oakland Invaders before returning to the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks in 1987 and 1988.
