"Marriage" and "husband" are important words to us

said an elated California man, who was part of the winning legal team. "This is why we were fighting."

This expression reminded me of a conversation that I had, last fall before the elections, with a woman at a party. I don't know if she is evangelist, though I know that her church and Jesus are important parts of her life.

She said that she went to the headquarters of the "Vote NO" to learn more and to see if a compromise could arrived.

Her compromise? Not to call it "marriage." She suggested a different, made-up term, don't remember what it was.

Without expressing my opinion about the ballot measure itself, I just told her that she was too late. Had this term really been a major issue, they could have tried to discuss it early, instead of quickly putting with the measure on the ballot, being so sure of the outcome.

The rest, of course, is history.

I doubt many people like the woman you met will ever truly understand.
