January 31 through March 3; Friday, March 2, 7:00 p.m. (Artist Talk and Closing Reception) Intermedia Arts, 2822 Lyndale Avenue South, Minneapolis. “Not About Bombs” is an exhibit that addresses how a female perspective can fit into the modern context of turmoil and conflict through art and avoid falling into the typical ways that women are represented... and misrepresented. The women in this exhibit contribute art that is visually and conceptually accomplished, but unpredictable and emotionally engaging. Because if anything, as a long, drawn-out, mind-numbing war comes to a "close," emotional investments in Iraq are few and far between. Featured Artists: Sama Alshaibi, Dena Al-Adeeb, Sundus Abdul Hadi, Tamara Abdul Hadi, and Julie Adnan. Sponsored by: Intermedia Arts and the Iraqi and American Reconciliation Project (IARP). 12. Minnesota Cuba Film Festival
Thursdays from February 23 through March 29, 7:00 p.m. St. Anthony Main, 115 Main Street Southeast, Minneapolis. Six contemporary Cuba films will be shown at St. Anthony Main Theatre, each Thursday for six weeks. This is a rare opportunity to explore the nation subject to a brutal U.S. blockade. In the absence of easily available literature and art from Cuba, in the absence of current information about Cuba in U.S. mainstream media, the space is filled by the story U.S. policymakers give us. That story is one of lies, half-truths and endless hostility towards a beleaguered nation that has successfully resisted U.S. economic, political and military aggression for over 50 years. In this diverse selection of films, challenging issues are faced: homeless kids in the "special period" following the collapse of the Soviet Union; economic differentiation that's become exacerbated in recent years; GLBT issues and the first sexual reassignment surgery. All films are in Spanish with English subtitles. Tickets: $8.50. Sponsored by: the Minnesota Cuba Committee and the Film Society of Minneapolis/St. Paul. FFI: Visit www.minnesotacubacommittee.org.

Robin Monahan is a native Minnesotan and became politically active after January 2010 when the U.S. Supreme Court, with its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, declared "corporations, for the sake of law, are persons." After walking across the United States from May to October 2010, with his brother Laird, to raise awareness about the issue of corporate personhood, Robin became a volunteer for Minnesota Move to Amend. That organization states: "We, the People of the United States of America, reject the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling, and move to amend our Constitution to firmly establish that money is not speech and that human beings, not corporations, are entitled to constitutional rights." Robin will speak about the Move to Amend as well as the efforts of others who believe that corporations are not people and must not be permitted to buy elections and run our government. These elites, who serve the 1% at home and abroad, impose austerity—often by the use of drones, armies, and the police—on the 99% to expand their profits.
