Occupy KC hopes police will waive cost of protest

Protesters from the Occupy Kansas City movement want to march on downtown streets Dec. 30.

But they donít have the $4,100 fee to pay police officers to shut down traffic near Ninth and Main streets to ensure their safety. So an attorney representing the group asked the Board of Police Commissioners on Friday for an indigency waiver, prompting this discussion:

1. Hm. That's tricky. My initial reaction was that

one the one hand, it kinda sounds like "Sure, you can have free speech...if you can afford it." On the other, I guess it's not like they couldn't march on the sidewalks.

Then I actually clicked the link and saw that those were pretty much the arguments being presented! Funny.

I'm not sure where I'd come down on this one.

2. It is an interesting argument.

I can understand both sides of the issue. Hopefully, there will be a middle ground that can be reached.
