With events canceled, KC food trucks get creative to find business in new places

When the coronavirus pandemic began, the Taste of Brazil food truck was faced with a problem that threatened many other businesses like it: events were canceling left and right, and a large portion of the truck’s business was dropping off.

Cristian Maciel, co-owner of the Taste of Brazil restaurant and the one in charge of its food truck, said the truck had events booked every weekend until next March. But with the pandemic looming, all the festivals and events the truck planned to attend were canceled.

“At that point, I basically came back home,” Maciel said. “For a whole week I was like, ‘oh my god, what am I going to do with my life now?’ because I didn’t have any income at all. “

But out of the ashes of the canceled events came a new idea for the food truck.

“My wife and I, because she owns a food truck called the Hungry Hatch, sat at home and said, ‘Wait, how about we go to people’s houses now? How about going to neighborhoods?’” Maciel said.

1. Thank you for posting this.

We are at the very beginning of profound changes. Two or three years from now a lot of things will be very different.

However, I will say that I'm deeply disturbed by the lack of masks.

2. We have a food truck one night a week in our neighborhood

It's a nice change of pace from my own cooking. Tonight an ice cream truck will be in our church parking lot - social distance ice cream social. Free will drop money for your ice cream in a donation box. I hope the much needed rain cooperates with our little party. Looking forward to seeing friends from church whom I haven't seen since lock down in middle of March. Plus I want it to be a good night for the ice cream company. Small business owners who are adapting to this very challenging business climate deserve to be supported.

3. That's what food trucks are doing here, too.

There’s a social media site that area food trucks use to announce where they will be. They show up in store and church parking lots, swimming pools and various neighborhoods. Some trucks ask you to order online and they’ll have it ready for you to drive up and roll down your car window! They’ve gotten pretty creative and we are loving having access to many different types of foods!!
