Old railroad bed to West Yellowstone will be converted into multi-use path

A portion of the abandoned Oregon Short Line railroad will be resurrected to once again carry Yellowstone National Park-area tourists.

On Thursday the Custer Gallatin National Forest announced approval of a nine-mile section of nonmotorized multi-use path along the old rail bed between West Yellowstone and Reas Pass at the Montana-Idaho border.

“We'll do some pre-work this summer with staff, brushing it out,” said Jason Brey, ranger for the Hebgen Lake Ranger District. “The heavy lifting won’t start until next summer.”

Also included in the planning are rest stops along the route with picnic tables and benches.

The bottom link goes to "redacting" right away (must say something nasty about IQ45!) but the Oregon Short Line link tells a great story.

Good stuff!

it's been a long time getting this going. I was down there a few weeks ago and was talking to the owners at Free Heel about this. Sounds like a great idea, I hope it doesn't get trashed by ATVs like everything else. I know this trail very well, it could use some improvement but I wonder how they will deal with the portions that merge with the USFS road network where I like to go not on foot.
