My paternal grandparents homesteaded in 1915, near Conrad. (dial-up warning)

Last week, a rapidly moving fire traveled about a mile and a half and destroyed the barn that was built in 1930. Also consumed were two other buildings, a grainery and an icehouse.

Fortunately, no humans were injured. two barn cats perished. The house, main shop and the rest of the homestead are ok.
the Conrad Fire department came seven mile to help. The Hutterites and other neighbors also came to help.

I couldn't help but notice how cleanly much of the fire burned. I saw a video of a fire in a Tennessee distillery wherein an old wooden barn housing aging whiskey went up. Flamed like a bunsen burner, no smoke, against a beautiful blue sky.

I'm guessing there was little to do but to keep it from spreading any further. I'm sorry for your losses.

My paternal grandparents homesteaded just a couple of miles east of Fairfield about the same time.

My maternal grandfather homesteaded and mined near Valier around about the same time. I was born at St. Mary's Hospital in Conrad during WWII while my father was serving in the Navy. I know the Valier-Conrad area quite well and drove through there earlier this year.

I'm glad that the rest of the homestead was saved and especially that no one (human) was hurt. I know well how fire departments - and neighbors, including Hutterite neighbors - respond in need.
