Dodge County Sheriff update: What happens to the election after Weitzel's plea deal

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Dodge County Sheriff Dustin Weitzel took a plea deal with federal prosecutors on a wire fraud charge, raising questions about his upcoming reelection bid. He faces up to 20 years in prison.

As part of the agreement, Weitzel agreed to surrender his law enforcement license and never hold another law enforcement job.

Weitzel is up for reelection as sheriff this fall and is currently running unopposed.

Officials with the Nebraska Secretary of State’s office said if Weitzel wants to remove his name from the ballot, he has until Aug. 3 to file the necessary paperwork. The Dodge County Clerk would then notify the Republican Party, which would have until Sept. 1 to nominate a replacement candidate.
