Gordmans files for bankruptcy protection, will liquidate inventory and assets

Gordmans Stores Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection Monday, saying it plans to liquidate inventory and assets.

The century-old Omaha-based operator of more than 100 stores in 22 states employs about 5,100 people.

Gordmans, like other mall-based retailers, has been struggling with slumping sales.

The company said all stores will continue operating as normal as U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Omaha sorts through the process, which will include certifying a plan to sell inventory and assets for a price that best satisfies creditors owed about $130 million.
