Legislative races may put filibuster rule in play
In Nebraska's 49-member, non-partisan legislature, 33 is a critical figure.
That's the number of votes required to end a filibuster, the number that prevents the majority from always having its way.
Filibusters are not uncommon in Nebraska's Legislature and they are not a weapon used only by the legislative minority, although the minority naturally turns to that tool more often.
Unlike Washington, legislative votes in Nebraska do not always, or almost always, divide senators along political party lines, although that tends to become a natural division based on political beliefs.
