Daycare centers step up opposition to proposed regulations
CONCORD — Child care center owners say new regulations proposed by the Department of Health and Human Services will put many of them out of business. Members of “Keep Our Doors Open” are scheduled to meet with staffers from Gov. Chris Sununu’s office today.
“We’re not lobbyists; we’re not attorneys. We’re just a bunch of concerned child care providers who are very worried about what’s going to happen to our businesses and the care of children if this moves forward,” says group member JoAnn O’Shaughnessy, owner of the Manchester Child Development Center.
The top violation issued to day care centers by state inspectors is lack of sufficient training or inadequate documentation of training, and the new rules require even more training and more continuing education.
“They’re asking us to hire people with more qualifications, to hire substitutes with more qualifications,” said O’Shaughnessy. “We’re lucky if we can find a warm, loving body. These people are monitored all the time by another teacher who is a qualified lead teacher, and if they push these standards, we’re going to be closing rooms, if not entire centers.”
