Trenton Mayor Jackson’s nonprofit loses tax-exempt status after submitting no returns to IRS for 3 yearsTRENTON >> If Mayor Eric Jackson runs the city like his nonprofit, Trenton might be in trouble.
The Internal Revenue Service revoked the tax-exempt status of the mayor’s nonprofit, Moving Trenton Together, on May 15, according to information on the IRS website. The tax-exempt status was revoked for the nonprofit’s failure to file tax returns via a Form 990 for three consecutive years, the IRS said.
The first-term mayor launched his nonprofit in 2014.
With the nonprofit’s funding, Jackson brought “American Idol” winner Ruben Studdard and New Edition’s Johnny Gill to perform in Trenton at his “Christmas in the Capital City.”
However, The Trentonian reported last December that the mayor’s nonprofit had been operating in the dark because the organization had yet to file any tax returns since its inception, raising concerns about where the money is coming from to organize the free events and bring in the big-name talent.
