Rutgers University lecturers got a 'revolutionary' contract. Now some want it scrapped
A week after Rutgers University and its union of 3,000 part-time lecturers reached a tentative contract, dozens of union members are urging their colleagues to strike it down.
While union leaders hail the deal as "revolutionary," some rank-and-file members feel the greatest benefits — raises of 33 percent over the four-year agreement — favor only a "select few" longtime adjuncts.
“We campaigned for a year for $7,250 per course and health care for all but looking at the current tentative agreement I was shocked at the pay disparity and raises that would benefit a select few people,” said Thomas Moomjy, an adjunct since 2016 in the American studies department.
Instead, those at the lowest tier would see their salary per course rise over the term of the proposed contract to $5,799 from the current base of $5,178 per course, with no health benefits.
