Upgraded Tim Piazza anti-hazing bill now up to Gov. Murphy

An upgraded anti-hazing bill gained final legislative approval in the state Senate on Wednesday, seeking tougher penalties on people found guilty of hazing in New Jersey.

The bill, S84, is named after Timothy Piazza, a Readington native and Pennsylvania State University student who died February 2017 after falling down a flight of stairs following a night of hazing and heavy drinking at a fraternity house.

The measure previously passed the state Senate but needed to be voted on again after the state Assembly passed the bill last week with new amendments. Lawmakers unanimously voted the bill out of the Senate with no opposition both times.

It’s now up to Gov. Phil Murphy to sign or veto the bill. If he approves, it will upgrade the crime of hazing in the Garden State from a disorderly persons offense to a fourth-degree crime if it causes bodily harm, and a person facing aggravated hazing charges would face a third-degree crime, rather than fourth-degree.

Good for Tim.
